Mohammed Bamyeh, professor in Sociology and a European Studies Center and Global Studies Center faculty affiliate, was awarded the 2025 Kuwait Prize in economic and social sciences for sociology by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.

U TIMES: Slavic languages professor and nursing alum honored with Sheth awards
Nancy Condee, director of Pitt’s Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (as well as the inaugural director of the Global Studies Center), and Vivian Hui, who received her PhD from Pitt’s School of Nursing in 2022, were honored with the 2026 Sheth International Achievement Awards at a ceremony on April 14.

Ilknur Lider, a faculty affiliate of ASC, REEES, ESC, and GSC, has been named president of the American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages (AATT). An active member and former AATT executive secretary, she will serve in her role as president for the next three years.

Alumnus Alex-Jaden Peart won a Fulbright Austria US Teaching Assistantship
Peart, an ESC and GSC alumnus, has won a Fulbright Austria U.S. Teaching Assistantship (USTA). Since 1962, the country’s Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research has awarded recent U.S. college and university graduates interested in teaching English in Austria.

Alumna Jasmine Al Rasheed won a German Academic Exchange Service graduate fellowship
Jasmine Al Rasheed, who received a Bachelor of Philosophy in International and Area Studies from the Global Studies Center in 2023, will use the award to fund her master’s degree in global health from a joint program between two German schools: Humboldt University of Berlin and Charité, the Berlin University of Medicine.
