Internships
James C. Gaither Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates. Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials.
Central Intelligence Agency Student Programs offers paid student internships of various duration for undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be US citizens and should have a strong academic record (3.0 GPA or better).
Language Study and Study Abroad
ARIT Summer Fellowships for Intensive Advanced Turkish provide full funding for intensive study of Advanced Turkish at Boğaziçi University in İstanbul, Turkey. Applicants must test at the Intermediate-High level in Turkish.
American Councils for International Education administers a variety of cultural exchange, study abroad, and research programs on behalf of both public and private funders. Participation in these programs is through an open, merit-based competition, and facilitates mutual understanding between the United States and Eurasia. Full or partial funding may be provided through the American Councils Outbound Scholarship Fund for each of the programs below:
- Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) American Councils' longest-running study abroad program, provides intensive Russian-language immersion for US undergraduate and graduate students in Kazakhstan, Estonia, and Armenia.
- Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP) provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, scholars, and professionals the unique opportunity to study the languages of the independent states of the former Soviet Union in an overseas, immersion setting for a summer, semester or academic year.
- Russian Heritage Speakers Program is intended to address the specific needs of students who speak Russian at home or with relatives, or who grew up speaking Russian and wish to strengthen their Russian skills.
- Russian Overseas Flagship Program (ROFP) offers Advanced to professional (Flagship)-level training in Russian in Kazakhstan for students already at the advanced (2 or 2+) levels of proficiency.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program supports study abroad for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university.
Boren Awards for International Study support undergraduate study abroad in areas of the world critical to US national security. Boren Scholars must chose programs of study with a justifiable connection to national security, and agree to seek employment with either the federal government or in higher education upon graduation.
- Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for Summer Programs Summer-only programs must be eight (8) weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students. Maximum summer scholarship award is $8,000. Boren-funded programs can begin no earlier than June 1.
- Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for Academic Term and Year focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. All applicants must demonstrate how their study programs and future goals are connected to a broad understanding of national security. Maximum semester award is $10,000. Maximum academic year award is $20,000.
The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) offers high-quality, proficiency-driven online courses in four Central Eurasian languages. Courses are open to undergraduates, graduate students, adult learners, and high school juniors and seniors. This accelerated eight-week program is equivalent to one year of language study, developing speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills through intensive instruction and a range of engaging co-curricular activities. Funding opportunities are available.
Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master's and Ph.D. students.
- Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
- Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: Beginning, intermediate or advanced level;
- Chinese, Japanese, Russian: Intermediate or advanced level.
The Indiana University Bloomington Summer Language Workshop is one of the oldest and most innovative accelerated language training programs in the world. It offers scholarship opportunities for in-person, online, and overseas programs.
National Security Agency Undergraduate Programs offer several paid student internships during the summer to undergraduate students. Applicants must be US citizens and should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Intelligence Analysis Summer Program offers rising college seniors the opportunity to receive training in a multi-faceted cryptologic discipline that involves research, analysis, and the presentation of findings that enable us to provide the fullest possible Signals Intelligence picture to U.S. policymakers, military commanders, and other Intelligence Community members.
- Summer Language Program offers foreign language students the opportunity to sharpen their language skills in reading and listening to a professional level. As an apprentice to senior NSA language analysts, you'll gain intensive experience exploiting communications for vital intelligence missions.
The Shevchenko Society provides scholarships for students enrolled in a Ukrainian language program over the summer.
The School of Russian and Asian Studies (SRAS) offers a number of Program Grants to help cover the costs of studying abroad. These grants are “stackable” – apply for as many as four at a time. Note all awards below require a program length of at least 6 weeks in order to apply.
