ROTC Flagship Summer Language Program

The ROTC Flagship Summer Language Program (FSLP) of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies will provide full scholarships to selected ROTC students from any accredited U.S. college or university for 8 weeks of intensive summer language study at the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year level of Russian. This program will be held entirely in Riga, Latvia, in partnership with SRAS and the Liden & Denz Intercultural Institute of Languages.

Pitt ROTC FSLP in Riga will offer the equivalent of one full academic year’s worth of language training, while building regional knowledge of countries where Russian is spoken through a rich cultural program of lectures, excursions, local conversation partners, volunteer service and homestay opportunities, and other co-curricular activities. Students completing the program will earn 8 transferable credits through the University of Pittsburgh’s prestigious Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute.

ROTC FSLP is an initiative sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education.

Pitt ROTC FSLP scholarships will fully cover the cost of:
• Program tuition and fees
• Travel to and from Riga
• Accommodations in Riga
• Stipend for meals during the program
• Required textbooks

Program Dates and Prerequisites:
• First day of classes in Riga: Monday, June 14, 2027
• Last day of classes in Riga: Friday, August 6, 2027
• Students must attend the program for the full 8 weeks. Late arrivals and/or early departures are not permitted.
• Applicants must have completed the equivalent of 2 to 6 semesters of college-level Russian language instruction (depending on the course level applied to) by the end of the Spring 2027 semester, before the start of the summer program.
