Nancy Condee

Professor Nancy Condee is Director of the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Center (REEES, Title VI) at the University of Pittsburgh, with academic affiliations in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Program for Film and Media Studies, and the Cultural Studies Program.

Dr. Condee's work spans award-winning research, doctoral mentoring, collaborative initiatives, and global programming that have helped shape the field and deepen understanding of a region marked by profound political and cultural change.

An internationally recognized expert in Russian cultural and film studies, Dr. Condee’s scholarship has appeared in leading academic and public venues and has been honored with major awards in the field. Supported by prestigious grants and fellowships, her work has played a vital role in examining the possibilities of cultural dialogue with Russia and its regional neighbors over the past half-century.

Her publications include Imperial Trace: Recent Russian Cinema (Oxford, 2010)—awarded the 2011 MLA Scaglione Prize and the 2010 Book Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS)—as well as Cinemasaurus: Recent Russian Film in its Contemporary Context (Academic Studies Press, 2020; co-editors Alexander and Elena Prokhorov) and The Cinema of Alexander Sokurov (I. B. Tauris, 2011; co-editor Birgit Beumers). Her articles have appeared in The Nation, The Washington Post, October, New Left Review, PMLA, Sight and Sound, as well as such Russian journals as NLO, Seans, Voprosy literatury, and Iskusstvo kino. She has worked as a consultant for Carnegie Corporation, the Edinburgh Film Festival, San Francisco Film Festival, the Library of Congress, and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) on several Frontline television documentaries. Previous appointments include Chair of the Board, National Council for East European and Eurasian Research (NCEEER) and inaugural Director, Global Studies Center (Title VI) at the University of Pittsburgh. Fellowships include a Gaidar Fellowship from the public-policy institute RANEPA (Russian Presidential Academy for the National Economy); a British Academy Fellowship (St. Antony’s, Oxford); and a MacArthur International Peace and Security Fellowship. Her research interests are Russian cultural politics, with a specialization in contemporary cinema.

Beyond her research, Dr. Condee is deeply committed to mentoring emerging scholars and building global academic communities. Through her leadership in national and international professional associations and her longstanding engagement in cross-border initiatives, she has consistently advanced global understanding and meaningful cultural exchange.
