Much of the programming at the European Studies Center is funded by the Jean Monnet grant, a European Union initiative that encourages teaching, research and reflection in the field of European integration studies in higher education institutions. The University of Pittsburgh has been successful in every renewal competition since 1988, cementing its place as one of only ten European Union Centers of Excellence in the United States.
As an NRC funded under Title VI of the Higher Education Act, the ESC develops and oversees curricular and co-curricular programming to enhance foreign language and area studies education at Pitt, at the K-12 level, and for community colleges and other institutions of higher learning throughout the country. Funded by the US Department of Education.
