Grants and Funding

The Jean Monnet Actions under Erasmus+ promote the study of the EU, its institutions and policies and EU-US relations through teaching programs, scholarly research and outreach activities.  Pitt’s first European Union Center of Excellence was established in 1998, when the University of Pittsburgh won a national competition.  Since 1998, the University of Pittsburgh has been successful in each renewal competition, transitioning from a stand-alone EU Centers of Excellence program administered through the European External Action Services (EAS) to a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence under the European Commission’s Erasmus+ Program.  Pitt is one of only three European Union Centers in the United States continuously receiving the designation.

As an NRC funded under Title VI of the Higher Education Act, the ESC develops and oversees curricular and co-curricular programming to enhance foreign language and area studies education at Pitt, at the K-12 level, and for community colleges and other institutions of higher learning throughout the country. Funded by the US Department of Education.
