Purpose

On December 31, 2013, Kathleen Musante ended her term as longest-serving Director of CLAS. CLAS is proud to make available awards named in honor of her parents, Edward J. and Jacqueline M. Musante. One award will be made available this year to provide financial support for travel and other educational expenses to undergraduate students who are conducting research in Latin America.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students currently pursuing a CLAS certificate. For consideration, applicants must submit: A proposed plan for study abroad to Latin America; A statement of academic intent that addresses both academic and personal goals, as well as an explanation of why you feel you are one of the most deserving candidates for this award. Please also address how you are currently financing your college education; A resume.

Funding

$1,000 scholarship to study abroad in Latin America.

During her distinguished career at CLAS, Shirley Kregar, always a fervent advocate for international study, mentored hundreds of students in their quest to gain cross-cultural experience. CLAS is proud to make available awards to be named in Shirley’s honor. The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is very pleased to announce the opening of the competition for this year’s Shirley Kregar Scholarships for international study abroad.

Eligibility 

Undergraduate students currently pursuing a CLAS certificate. For consideration, applicants must submit: A Proposed plan for study abroad to Latin America; A statement of academic intent that addresses both academic and personal goals, as well as an explanation of why you feel you are one of the most deserving candidates for this award. Please also address how you are currently financing your college education (1-2 pages); A resume.

Funding

Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded this year to support students planning to study abroad during this academic year.

Purpose

The Undergraduate Teaching Award offers undergraduates the opportunity to enrich their educational experience and enhance their resumé. The Award is given to an outstanding undergraduate (currently enrolled in one of the credentials of the Center for Latin American Studies) to assist a professor in a Latin American, Caribbean, and/or Latinx course and is generally available each term.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students currently pursuing a CLAS certificate. To apply, the student and CLAS faculty member must present the following documents:

  • Letter of nomination from the faculty teaching the course (1-2 pages). This should include:
    • How the student will participate in the course.
    • How the student's involvement is expected to contribute to implementation of teaching innovation otherwise not possible without the time commitment of an assignment.
  • Statement of intent (three-page maximum) defining own goals in the course.
  • Up-to-date resume.
  • One letter of recommendation of the student's qualifications to serve as a teaching assistant. This recommendation letter should be submitted by a faculty member other than the sponsor. The letter should be submitted directly to the academic advisor via email (bravo@pitt.edu).
